Activists
and Organizations
Civil
society plays a vital role in raising awareness
on the situation in Burma. You can create the environment
that will convince the UN Security Council to take
appropriate action on Burma. Here are some ideas
to get you started, and some examples from what
other organizations have done before:
|
|
|
| |
|
-
Write
a letter to your President, Prime Minister, and/or
your elected representative in Parliament/Congress
demanding UN Security Council action on Burma
following the recommendations in the “Crimes
in Burma” report.
|
-
Write
a letter to your elected representative urging
your government to use its diplomatic weight to
work with UN Security Council members to build
support for the establishment of a Commission
of Inquiry into war crimes and crimes against
humanity in Burma, and to make public statements
in support of UN Security Council action.
|
-
Organize
petitions addressed to your UN Permanent Representative,
your President, Prime Minister, and/or your elected
representative in Parliament/Congress demanding
the establishment of a UN-mandated Commission
of Inquiry into war crimes and crimes against
humanity in Burma.
|
-
Write
an editorial/letter to the editor of your local
newspaper demanding the establishment of a UN-mandated
Commission of Inquiry on crimes against humanity
and war crimes in Burma following the recommendations
in the “Crimes
in Burma” report.
|
-
Write
articles that advocate for the establishment of
a UN-mandated Commission of Inquiry into crimes
against humanity and war crimes in Burma. Contribute
to the campaign by writing reports that that document
the widespread and systematic abuses by the SPDC
against the people of Burma to help bolster the
case that the SPDC’s crimes constitute war
crimes and crimes against humanity.
|
-
Issue
press releases/statements on the need for the
establishment of a UN-mandated Commission of Inquiry
on crimes against humanity and war crimes in Burma
|
-
Organize
coffee hours/informational meetings to educate
the general public about the situation in Burma.
|
-
Have
local government bodies (eg City Councils) adopt
resolutions calling for UN Security Council action
on Burma following the recommendations in the
“Crimes in Burma” report.
