Crimes in Burma
On
21 May 2009, the International Human Rights Clinic at Harvard
Law School released a report titled “Crimes
in Burma”. The report, commissioned by
five of the world’s leading international jurists,
is based on UN documentation of widespread and systematic
abuses perpetrated by the SPDC in Burma.
The
report finds that there is a prima facie case of crimes
against humanity and war crimes in Burma, which justifies
further investigation.
The
report recommends that the UN Security Council:
•
Declare that the situation in Burma constitutes a threat
to international peace and security
•
Request that the UN Secretary-General establish a Commission
of Inquiry to investigate war crimes and crimes against
humanity in Burma.
•
Act upon findings and recommendations made by the Commission
of Inquiry, including a possible referral to the International
Criminal Court.
